The term “deaf-mute” it is a’expression now considered to be obsolete and is not appropriate to describe the deaf-mute. In the past, they used this expression to refer to a person who had a total loss of the hearing of the word. However, today we know that deaf people can use the Italian sign Language (LIS) or other alternative communication systems to interact with others, and that the deafness and the mutità are the two conditions are separate and not necessarily related to. Therefore, it is preferable to use terms such as “deaf person” or “the person with the disability hearing” to describe those who have a partial or total loss of hearing, and “person with a disability of the word” to indicate who has difficulty or inability to speak.
