The term “deaf” refers to a a person that has a partial or total loss of hearing. Deafness can be nature congenital or acquired, and can have several causes, including genetic defects, viral infections, or bacterial, acoustic trauma, exposure to excessive noise, autoimmune or vascular problems. Deaf people may have difficulty understanding the spoken word and communicate with others, depending on the degree of hearing loss.
